Doctor Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov (Russian: Николай Степанович Соколов) is a Russian rocket scientist, being a central character in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater[]
The game opens in 1964, with the FOX agent Naked Snake being parachuted into the jungle to find and rescue Sokolov, who is being held in a run down factory guarded by GRU soldiers. After trudging on through the jungle and intercepting the warehouse, Snake finds Sokolov burning any documents relating to the Shagohod in the fireplace. Snake almost successfully recovers Sokolov, despite being held up by the Ocelot Unit, only for The Boss, Snake's mentor, to reveal that she defected over to the Soviet Union. The Boss's Cobra Unit then kidnaps Sokolov and flies him into a helicopter, meanwhile the Russian sadist Colonel Volgin watches as The Boss throws Snake off the wooden bridge they were on.

While Sokolov is a physically weak coward, he is still an expert rocket scientist and weapon constructor.
